HERDA OR HC IN FOUNDATION BRED HORSES
|
I am adding this page to help educate the public about a terrible disease called HERDA or HC in
FOUNDATION BREED HORSES. My mare is breed Poco Bueno, Traveler, King top and bottom and is
the said source of lines that has generated this horrible disease. If you breed a carrier to carrier you will
have a higher percentage of getting a HERDA affected foal which isn't fair to the resulting foal and this
can be prevented by getting a blood test. My mare was everything a true Quarter Horse represented in
color, conformation, temperment, athletic, and more. It was a very sad day when we got the results from
UC Davis after a biopsy was done that she more than likely had it even though we already knew she did.
UPDATE--05/21/2007 THIS FILLY HAS BEEN TESTED THROUGH A
BLOOD TEST TO BE POSITIVE FOR HERDA. It was very hard to research the web on
this disease as nothing is updated and my mare didn't show all the signs that they said she would
show. After later talking with Dr. White at UC Davis and Ann Rashmire that I found there are several
different cases and that every horses case is different depending on the individual horse and care. AS
OF 05/2007 THERE IS NOW A BLOOD TEST AVAILABLE, YOU JUST HAVE TO PULL ABOUT 30 PIECES
OF THE MANE INCLUDING THE ROOT AND SEND IN WITH THE FEE AND THEY CAN TEST TO SEE IF
YOUR HORSE IS A CARRIER OR HAS HERDA. Please note that to have a HERDA carrier horse will not
have symptoms of this disease. They will act and look like a normal horse should. Since my filly is
HERDA positive that means that both her sire and dam are carriers of this disease. I have set up a link
above to view her pedigree so you can compare your horses to mine to see if you think you should test
or not. This page is just to educate people on this disease as if you have any concerns or questions
you should contact Dr. White at UC Davis or Ann Rashmire, DVM at The University of Mississippi or
Cornell University.

Just a few of the signs she showed from
this horrible disease.
large stretchy hocks
A stretchy bump that she received after her
biopsy which should of went away if she did
not have HERDA
A large squishy bump she received over
night which is related to HERDA
Skin that could be pulled on, and could feel it
wasn't attached to her body
skin on neck that could be pulled on and
could feel it wasn't attached to her body
discoloration on hips
discoloration on neck, the spots that had
discoloration were no longer attached to her
body, the skin had detached itself
As you can see she appears to be a normal
horse unless I point these features out to
you. So please be careful when purchasing a
double breed Poco Bueno, King, or Traveler
horse or if breeding to one.
